Help with Searches
The search engine offers three ways of searching Miss Rand's corpus: type in a word or phrase and click FIND, click on a category of topics, or click on a letter to browse an alphabetical listing of topics. Whichever option you use, the search engine will list the articles (or books or essays) in which Ayn Rand discussed a given topic, along with the page reference.
The search engine will locate complete and partial matches of words and
phrases entered in the search form. Enclosing a phrase in double quotations marks
(e.g., "individual rights")
will search for that phrase as a unit, and yield keywords and/or articles that match it. Mirroring
the layout of The Ayn Rand Lexicon,
the search results display two kinds of bibliographic references:
the books and/or articles in which the search term occurs; and cross references to
keywords that were deemed germane to the keyword.
These latter offer the keyword's intellectual context.
The search results are ranked in order of relevance to the term.
Keywords and cross reference are displayed as hyperlinks. Keywords that are less relevant
and/or partially matched may be listed with only one book or article:
click on a particular keyword (or cross reference) to find where else in Ayn Rand's
writings it occurs. Books are also displayed as hyperlinks,
which will take you to ARI's books page. Page references point to the original source and,
where appropriate, to a paperback edition.
